Today I was asked a question, which at first didn't seem to be an issue. I was asked "if my church held two services, a contemporary and traditional." Responding with, "No, my church holds one service combined with tradional hymns and praise music," this person told me that that he/she "doesn't believe in contemporary worship and believes it to be totally wrong." "I just don't believe in it," was what "he/she" said.
I understand that in todays world our "older generation" my be a little set in their ways. They were raised on traditional hymns and a more conservative order of service. While this is fine, I don't believe that it is the RIGHT way to worship and believe that there is no WRONG way either. Our world is changing by the second, and things in the church have evolved from stand up, sit down, and sing, to let's praise the Lord! I understand that not every church sings praise music, and thats fine. I enjoy traditional hymns and I enjoy praise music. I can feel led by both. If I am truly worshiping and being led by the Holy Spirit, why is this wrong? Different people are led in different ways. Whether singing "Blest Be the Tie That Binds" or "Shout to the Lord," aren't we singing praises to God?
The subject then led to a statement about K-LOVE. I am an avid listener to K-LOVE. I listen to it on a daily basis. It makes me feel good. The "topic starter" stated that "rock and roll Christian music isn't Christian!" Wow! Stunned, I didn't know what to say, but keeping my professionalism, I kept quiet through the whole conversation and thanked God after the fact for helping keep my mouth shut. I was deeply bothered and slightly offended, because I am a Christian. I feel closer to God when listening and singing to this type of music. Even though I am strong in my faith and am quick to get quickly wrapped up in "religious talk," a dental office isn't the place. I realize that in our Christian religion, which I don't consider to be a religion at all...it is a relationship with our Lord, Right?...you've got different denominations, Baptist, Methodist, Presbyterian, and so on. Each has a difference, or else we'd all be in one church on Sunday. Everyone has a different order of worship. Some are more charasmatic than others. Either way, I don't think there is a RIGHT way or WRONG way as long as you are truly worshiping the Lord and are filled with the Holy Spirit. No matter what "denomination" we are, as long as we have accepted the Lord into our heart and have been saved, we will live have eternal life with our savior. So, I will keep making my "Joyful Noise to the Lord." Psalm 100

The love of our lives was born on 8.13.09 and is the light of our lives. Mills is our happy, busy, typical little boy, who never slows down. He is a huge fan of Moose and Zee, Handy Manny and Mickey Mouse and loves playing with his "big-brother-dog," Joey. There is not a day that goes by that I don't look at this precious miracle given to us by God and sit in awe.

Such a touchy topic. I have had this conversation before. No real easy way out. Nothing Biblical to back up either opinion. I, myself, prefer a much more upbeat service with an occasional oldie-but-goodie mixed in. Maybe oneday FBC will have more services to offer :)
What's up Amy. I read your comment on worship and my view is, if you are a mature Christian involved in a church you need to realize it is not about you. You hear people say I like this or I like that or I need this. What about the lost people that might be in the congregation. For me it is what is reaching those people. I personally have a preference with music but bottom line I want to do what reaches the most people, whether it's a hymn or praise music, it doesn't matter. In todays society, a lot of churches are me churches, it's all about me, what can I get. It's not what you can get it is what you can give! I was talking to a lady a few months ago who is a Christian. She made the comment that her church is becoming an AB church. I said what do you me, she said "my church is becoming all black, and I don't care for the music and I want be going back. My question is, when you go to Heaven and find that heaven may have a few more Affican Americans that Whites, are you going to tell God that you don't want to be their. You only have one more option and I think you don't want to go their. So my soap box today is, Christians it's time to come together, white, black, red, yellow, it doesn't matter. Let's reach out to our community and not worry about I and me, and lets put others first. Our goal is to go to Heaven to be with Jesus and take as many people as we can. I enjoyed reading your comment Amy. Take care

Commenting on my own post, if either of you (Kate or Phil) read this, thanks for the comments. They are both so true. Phil, you hit the nail on the head!! Wow! You are so right!
First I will say AMY- wow...
Now loving music myself let me personally comment- The music itself is not about the beats per measure. It is about worshipping. Although sometimes as a christian I am down or I feel sad, worried and music lifts me up. The scripture is full of praise and music is worship for me.
Now as Christians, Phil, you are correct. We must realize it is about reaching LOST souls. If we as a church sit and continues to satisfy ourselves, becasue it is our "church"... Well we reach noone, souls continue to die and go to hell, and we become relegious. We loose our relationship with Christ and TOTALLY miss the boat....
I know those of you that have commented dont want to miss the boat and we dont want anyone we love to either... So move on, love the music and worship God and keep on growing. When we get to heaven it wont matter we all will dance the streets of gold and rejoice together. I am hoping I will know how to play the drums in my mansion.:)
i personally feel that this is just another example of what so many feel, "i'm better than you because...". it's just silly. no one has the right to say that one way to worship is wrong. but, unfortunately people push their feelings on other people all the time. the world would be a better place if we all embraced our differences and respected one another for our different opinions. no one has the right to judge but God. next time this person comes in tell them to adopt the philosophy..."it's whatever floats your boat"!
Amy,
So funny that you should post this topic. My husband and I just relocated here to the south and are having such a hard time finding a church where we fit in. I don't go to church to fit in, but I want to go to a church where we feel comfortable. Right now, we are just looking for a church home where we can go to learn more about our faith and pray to God.
Thanks for your words! We can only pray for those closed minded people and be thankful that God has allowed us to be open minded!
