Bump in Our Road!

You may remember me saying about a month ago that our Mills had started Stage 3 foods and a bit of table food (ground up, of course). I had mentioned that at first, he gagged, but the next night, he ate his whole supper. Now, we have hit a bump in our semi-curvy road. Mills' little brain has told him that texture is not something that he needs to like. I am clueless as to what to do and am wondering if there are any similar stories or suggestions that any of you have. Here's whats going on now....
  • Mills will eat lets say....chicken noodle for a few bites, but as soon as he "realizes" that's its different, he acts as if he's gagging.
  • I can put peas and carrots on his tray. Sometimes he will pick them up and feed himself. The next night, he may get very angry at the thought of eating them.
  • I fixed spaghetti the other night, ground it up in the food mill, he ate 5 or 6 bites without a fuss, then realized that it was textured and didn't like it anymore. Thus, the gagging started.
  • This week at Mimi's, she fed him his lunch, he did fine, then gagged until he threw up. When he got home and I fed him supper. I put him in his high-chair, he got mad, so I let him throw his tantrum. When the crying finished, he smiled and so I began to feed him. He did fine, realized there was a carrot on his tongue, gagged, then threw it up.
  • He does okay with puffs, crunchies, etc., but will sometimes act as if he's gagging.
  • He used to love eating his solids, now when I put him in his chair, he gets MAD, and I am wondering if it is because he knows whats coming.

So, my questions are:

  • He has only two teeth, should I return to stage 2 foods and try again later? He will be 10 months old in 2 weeks.
  • Is this a mental thing with him (which I know it is) and what should I do about it?
  • Can I stop worrying that he is going to be a picky eater and never want steak and baked potato? ha! He can't eat mush until he's 5!

Our little boys are the same age so I enjoy reading your blog because most of the time they are doing the same things! Henry has started throwing some tantrums in his high chair and pretty much every diaper change. The one advice I can give you is what my pediatrician said...a lot of babies will gag if they aren't the ones to put it in their mouth (feeling the food tells their brain what to expect). I know he has gagged on food that he has put in his mouth but that might be from associating texture with gagging from the foods. Long story short...I would feed him only stage 2 baby food at the beginning of his meal and once he is done with that...I would put some cherrios on his tray and do something else in the kitchen while he explores those. Once he gets to be a pro at those, I would start adding more finger foods like bananas, but I wouldn't spoon feed him any texture. Hope this helps!

Both Caroline and Carson hated Stage 3 foods. We ended up leaving them on Stage 2 for the nutrition and slowly took them away as we added more table food. About the only stage 3 foods they would eat were the fruits. I think maybe it is the texture. Maybe that will help.

Ty acted that way a little bit too Amy.. he would totally freak out when he got to a "chunk" and go to spitting it out. So, I ended up backing away from them all together and staying on the 2's for a while longer... kept encouraging the puffies.. and then later all of a sudden I tried them again and he took to them just fine :)

We had the same problem. I started just giving Kase chicken sticks and green beans etc. (things that "mush" easily in his mouth.) I thought why in the world can he eat real food and choke/gag on stage 3 food? We still give him stage 2 and do some table food. I also think it helps when they feed themselves. More goes in his hair and on the floor than in his mouth though:)! I feel better knowing others have this issue. Got to be the texture. Hey, I wouldn't want it either!
